Thank you for bringing home a piece from The Glass Elemental. Handmade stained glass is durable but not indestructible, and a little care will keep it looking beautiful for years to come. This guide covers cleaning and maintenance, an important safety note, and recommendations for hanging and display.

CARING FOR YOUR STAINED GLASS ARTWORK

Regular Polishing

Dust and polish your piece regularly with a dry microfiber cloth to keep the glass and metal looking their best. If you notice the solder lines starting to dull, a household polish like Pledge or car wax can help restore some shine.

Understanding Oxidation

The framing, copper foil, and solder in your piece are natural metals, and like any metal, they will oxidize with exposure to air and moisture over time. This is a normal part of stained glass aging, not a defect. Early oxidation often looks like a dulling or slight cloudiness on the solder lines, where the metal loses its shine. As it progresses, you may notice slightly chalky looking patches along the seams of the solder and framing. Regular polishing slows this process considerably; if oxidation becomes heavy, a specialty patina or metal polish made for stained glass can restore some shine, so reach out if you'd like a recommendation.

Long Term Storage and Travel

If you are storing your piece long term or transporting it, always keep it stored upright rather than flat, and never stack anything on top of it. Use a padded box or case with layers of upholstery foam between the piece and the box walls to prevent shifting and pressure on the glass. Avoid extreme temperature swings during storage or transport, as rapid changes can stress both the glass and the solder joints.

NOTE ON LEADED SOLDER SAFETY

Traditional stained glass techniques used by The Glass Elemental utilize leaded solder, which is wonderful for its durability and workability but does require a few sensible precautions. Keep your piece out of reach of pets and small children, who may be tempted to mouth, chew, or handle it closely. Wash your hands after handling the piece directly, especially before eating, drinking, or touching your face. None of the soldered art from The Glass Elemental is intended to be worn as jewelry or placed in direct, prolonged contact with skin; these pieces are designed for display, not wear. With these simple habits, your piece can be enjoyed safely for a lifetime.

DISPLAY RECOMMENDATIONS

For pieces lighter than 5lbs:

  • Adhesive window hooks rated for at least double the weight of your artwork, applied to clean, dry glass are an excellent option. Once applied, leave the hook without any weight bearing for 24 hours before hanging your artwork, to ensure the adhesive has fully bonded to the window.

  • You can also use decorative ribbon or chain paired with a small hook or eyelet drilled into the window frame, or decorative hooks mounted into the window frame molding itself.

For pieces heavier than 5lbs:

  • Steel d rings anchored securely into the wall or frame structure, paired with jack chain rated over double the weight of the piece is ideal

  • Gallery framing wire, rated to at least twice the weight of the panel, anchored to secure wall hardware or gallery quality french cleats are another suggestion with a more crisp aesthetic
